Cagayan De Oro is located in the province of Misamis Oriental and about two (2) hours away from Marawi City where a fight between the armed forces of the Philippine and Maute group is taking place as of this writing. Martial law was declared in the whole Mindanao due to this incident but it did not deter us from continuing our journey to Cagayan De Oro and experience its famous white water rafting.
Arriving at Laguindingan Airport, You have the choices to riding a van or a taxi. We decided to rent a taxi for 500 Pesos divided to the Three (3) of us. The drive would usually take an hour to reach CDO proper but due to the fact that martial was declared, there were 2 or more checkpoints that we needed to go through which in turn causes more traffic than usual. The officers in charge of the checkpoints were pretty accommodating and even welcomed us as a tourist.
We stayed at a hotel that I found and book via booking.com. We book a room at Emerald Suites, Good for 4 people for about 7000 pesos for 3 nights of stay, That would be more or less 600 pesos per person per night which also includes a free breakfast.
- Very cheap price and very near to malls such as the newly built SM CDO Premiere
(Which was about 2 minutes walk from the hotel), Centrio and Rustans Supermarket.
- Free Breakfast with different choices every morning, Also you get an option for coffee or hot choco.
- Very friendly staff, The accommodating I’ve ever experience so far.
- They have a stable and fast internet. Faster than the one I got at home. Very nice for people who work online like us.
- Our room was on the third floor and there were no elevators. They do promote to burn fats rather than electricity.
- The restaurant below only opens for breakfast time.
For the rest of the first day, we just recuperated from the long journey to prepare ourselves for the next days’ event, White Water rafting.
Cagayan De Oro is famous for its white rapids, It’s one of the reasons that we visited the city in the first place. If you like extreme sports, pump up your adrenaline or just want to try something new then this one is for you. CDO has three (3) white water agency you can contact which are Kagay White Water Rafting, CDO Bugsay River Rafting But the one we choose it Great White Rafting. According to our guide, the Martial law did indeed affect the rafting business as a large amount of tourist has canceled their reservation. Nonetheless, Business still continues. As expected, It was incredible! We only took the basic course but it felt like it was almost too much for us that you would even forget the helicopters that would sometimes pass by the river. The city is full of energy and nightlife seems to be normal. Malls are a plenty, 3 of them is just a few walks outside of our hotel. We did try out some local “Puso” (hanging rice wrap in coconut leaves) which goes great with grilled pork, chicken or tocino.
Spent our last night at High Ridge
A restaurant situated in a higher location in CDO giving you a magnificent view of the city. The place is pretty challenging to get to if you don’t have your own vehicle. Fortunately, they have a shuttle van that could take you to the place and back for free. We only knew about it when we thought we got stuck got stuck in the place.
We took a taxi and spent a dinner there. They have an entrance fee of 100.00 pesos and it is consumable. The menu has plenty of option from Salads which I ordered to Meals for the family and even deserts.
Cagayan De Oro offers a lot of activity and leisure time. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Always take a time to visit local stores and experience the buzzing streets of the city.
